4 weight loss tips for the holidays

For anyone trying to lose weight, the holidays can be a huge source of stress, anxiety, and other negative feelings.

But don’t fret — there is a way to enjoy what you eat during the holiday season and still stay on track with your fitness goals. Here are four tips from the Fog City Fitness team to help you maintain weight loss even during the holidays.

1. Choose quality over quantity when it comes to your intake

Instead of filling your plate with a little bit of everything at the next holiday party, try a more mindful approach this year. Choosing quality foods you love over a larger quantity of so-so foods will help you stay on track with your goals, while still feeling like you’re splurging on yourself.

It may help to do a once-over and check out the food spread before you actually add anything to your place, so you can strategically choose which foods to chow down on.

2. Stick to your normal workout routine and diet when you’re not celebrating

Keeping to your usual routines during the holiday season will ensure that you don’t experience any setbacks in your fitness journey during this time of year.

If you’re worried about not being able to keep up, continue to prep healthy meals for the week (or start now, if you haven’t). Schedule regular training sessions with a personal trainer or a workout buddy via Zoom to keep yourself accountable during this time. After all, it’s harder to fall off your workout routine if you have someone motivating you.

3. Fill yourself up with healthy snacks before your next party

If you feel like you’ll be tempted to go overboard at the Christmas party, eat a few healthy snacks to quell your hunger beforehand. Consuming healthier snacks before the event will fill you up, so there’s less space for the less-than-healthy options that will undoubtedly be there.

Plus, this will give you even more of a reason to eat only the food you love (see point #1).

4. Replace holiday get-together meals with outdoor activities

Let’s face it: After attending a few of them, having multiple holiday parties and get-togethers to attend can start to feel stressful. And let’s not start with choosing what to wear and what meal to bring, either.

Why not change things up a bit? Swap out your annual Christmas party with a new tradition this year. Why not plan a bike ride through the city or a scavenger hunt in the neighborhood with your extended family?

Although it can be the easy option, food isn’t the only way to celebrate a special occasion. Find ways to bring the Christmas spirit outdoors and stay active — all at the same time. Who knows, you may start up a new tradition with your friends or family members!
